BRUNSWICK, GLYNN MOVE INTO REGION HOOPS TOURNEYS

By Kevin Price For GCA Athletics Brunswick High and Glynn Academy are set to play in the boys and girls Region 1-AAAAA basketball tournaments this week. With the regular season concluding Saturday, the Brunswick boys defeated Bradwell Institute in Hinesville on the weekend to secure the No. 1 seed from the South Sub-Region for the league tournament. The Pirates finished in a tie with Statesboro and Bradwell atop the sub-region, but won the tiebreaker to earn the top seed. BHS won't have to play until the semifinals and thus will finish among the top four and be in the Class AAAAA tournament. The two teams that play for the region title Friday will be the top two seeds for state and will play at home in the first round. The two semifinal losers will play for third-place in a Friday consolation game. BHS figures to play Statesboro in the semifinals. The Blue Devils handed the Pirates their only two losses in league play and would be on their home floor should they reach the semis as the round-of-four games and the finals are Thursday and Friday at Statesboro. First, though, the Blue Devils will have to win a first-round game then defeat the No. 2 seed from the North Sub-Region, Greenbrier, in the quarterfinals on Wednesday. The Glynn boys have already been eliminated from the tournament. The Red Terrors fell 63-61 Monday in a play-in game at South Effingham. The Mustangs were the No. 4 seed from the South while Glynn finished fifth in the sub-region during the season. Lakeside-Evans won the North boys sub-league and is also already penciled into the semifinals. Their likely opponent there is Bradwell, the No. 2 seed from the South. The Tigers are set to face South Effingham-Evans winner from Tuesday's quarterfinals. Evans finished third in the North during the season. In the girls field, the Lady Terrors will be in action Tuesday in a first-round game. As the No. 3 seed from the South, they will face Effingham, the No. 4 seed from the North. Tip time is 6 p.m. at Glynn. The GA-Effingham winner will draw Lakeside-Evans, the No. 2 team from the North, in a Wednesday quarterfinal. The quarterfinal winner will earn a state berth and of course advance to the semifinals where Bradwell awaits. The Lady Tigers won the South side of the region during the season, losing only to Brunswick High on Saturday in region play. As for the Lady Pirates, they are the No. 2 seed out of the South and will be in a Wednesday quarterfinal at home against either South Effingham or Greenbrier. South Effingham, the No. 5 seed from the South, defeated No. 4 Statesboro 36-35 in a play-in affair Monday. Greenbrier finished second in the North this season. Evans won the North and is already into the semifinals.
