By Kevin Price For GCS Athletics The Glynn Academy Red Terrors won the Region 1-AAAAA traditional wrestling championship on Saturday afternoon. The Terrors recorded 277.5 points as a team while claiming the title in the tournament held at Brunswick High. South Effingham finished second with 250.5 points while the host Pirates were third with 209.5 points. Glynn finished second last month at the area duals tournament, falling to South Effingham in the finals. GA went on to claim a second-straight runner-up finish at state duals while the two-time defending state champion Mustangs settled for third. The region title for the Terrors is their first since the 2008 season. In traditional wrestling individual wrestlers compete in their respective weight classes and earn points for their teams based on their finishes. The Terrors saw all of their wrestlers qualify for the state tournament while winning the team championship. The state traditional tourney opens this week with two sectional meets in each classification. One of those Class AAAAA sectionals will be held at Brunswick High on Saturday. Brunswick High had 12 wrestlers advance to sectionals. The top four wrestlers in each weight class at the region tournament advance to state sectionals. At sectionals, the top eight finishers at each weight will advance to the state championship meet in Macon. The top eight at each weight from the other sectional also will qualify, thus forming a 16-man bracket in each weight division with those in the field battling for the state crowns.
