BHS HOSTING REGION TRADITIONAL WRESTLING TOURNEY ON SATURDAY

By Kevin Price For GCS Athletics Brunswick High will serve as the host school for the Region 1-AAAAA Traditional Wrestling Tournament on Saturday. The tournament will take place in Brunswick Square Garden which is also home to the BHS basketball teams. The competition starts at noon and will continue throughout the afternoon. The quarterfinal round opens the action and will be followed by the semifinals which are scheduled for 1 p.m. The consolation matches will take place next with the finals, third- and fifth-place matches slated for about 5 p.m. The region tournament will feature four teams ranked among the top 10 in the latest coaches poll for Class AAAAA. South Effingham is ranked first, Glynn Academy second, Brunswick is fourth and Greenbrier is eighth. At the recent area team duals tourney, South Effingham edged Glynn to claim the league championship with Brunswick taking third and Greenbrier finishing fourth. South Effingham and Glynn advanced to the state duals as the top two finishers. There, Glynn reached the championship match and settled for a second straight runner-up finish after a narrow loss to champion Creekview. South Effingham, the two-time defending state champion, finished third this year. In the traditional format, each team’s wrestlers compete for the individual titles in their respective weight divisions while earning points for their teams based on their finishes inside their classes. The team with the most points in the end will be crowned the champion while the top finishers in each weight class will advance to the state tournament. The state tourney will begin with a pair of sectional meets to trim the field prior to the state championships being decided in Macon. Brunswick High also will host one of the Class AAAAA sectionals next Saturday. The state qualifiers from Regions 1, 3, 5 and 8 will also come here to compete for berths in the field in Macon. The other four regions in Class AAAAA will be in Houston County for the other state sectional. The state individual championships will be held at the Macon Centreplex on Feb. 13-15.
