TERRORS STRUGGLE IN LOSS TO LAKESIDE-EVANS,

By Kevin Price For GCS Athletics The Glynn Academy Red Terrors suffered their first Region 1-AAAAA loss of the season Friday night as they fell 28-14 to Lakeside-Evans at Glynn County Stadium. The Terrors (3-2 overall, 2-1 region) opened league action with back-to-back wins over Bradwell Institute (57-12) and Statesboro (21-20), but they couldn’t stop the roll that the Panthers are on so far this season. Lakeside is now 5-0 overall and has won its first three region games. The Panthers hadn’t started a season with four straight wins since the 2019 campaign, and they lost their fifth game that year. The Panthers and Brunswick High are now the only two unbeaten teams in the region after the first three weeks of the league schedule. “They’ve got a good football team and they kicked our teeth in,” said GA head coach Rocky Hidalgo. “We earned that one. We played exactly like we practiced, and there we go.” Last week, the Terrors, playing without their starting quarterback, trailed Statesboro 6-0 on the road at halftime before scoring the first 21 points of the second half and then holding off the hometown Blue Devils to get out of town with the victory. This week, Glynn fell behind the Panthers 14-0 at halftime, but Lakeside increased its lead to 28-0 with two more touchdowns in the third quarter. The Terrors tried to make a game of it in the fourth with two scores, but they wouldn’t get any closer. Lakeside dominated the stat sheet as the visitors totaled 362 yards while checking a struggling Glynn offense to only 125 yards for the night. The Terrors, going with T.Y. Chisolm at the start at quarterback a second straight week, managed only 62 yards in the opening half. Jayden Ellis, the starting signal-caller since the opening game, returned to the position before the end of the first half, but the Terrors struggled with him in the game, too. The two quarterbacks were a combined 5-for-14-passing for only 12 yards with an interception. With the offensive front having trouble blocking the Panthers, Glynn finished rushing for 113 yards on the night. “We have no continuity because we can’t run the same plays, we can’t get better,” Hidalgo said. For the Panthers, Ty Jones threw for 125 yards on 7-of-12 passing. Three of his completions went for touchdowns. Jones, a senior, also rushed for 135 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries in the win. In Lakeside’s 21-0 win over rival Evans on Sept. 6 to kick off the league schedule, Jones finished with more than 300 all-purpose yards. The Panthers scored on their first possession after a three-and-out by the Terrors. Jones threw a short pass to Mikeal Grissom who raced 56 yards along the Lakeside sideline for the opening score. The extra-point kick was good. Lakeside went 59 yards to score late in the first half for a 14-0 lead at the break with Jones hitting B.J. Grissom in the end zone from 19 yards out. The Panthers were in firm control after going 80 yards to open the third quarter, using 13 plays to score with Jones throwing a 7-yard pass to Mikeal Grissom for the touchdown. Jones would dash 75 yards for the fourth Panthers’ score late in the third period to make it a 28-0 game. The Terrors got on the board early in the final quarter on a 9-yard run by Greg Peacock which capped a 6-play, 44-yard drive. Glynn made it a two-score contest when Jamir Williams blocked a Lakeside punt on the Panthers’ next series, giving the Terrors the ball at the Lakeside 17. GA would score from there on a 2-yard run by Ellis. The PAT by Tuck Tucker made the score 28-14 with 5:06 to go, but after the Panthers recovered an onside kick, they managed to run out the remaining time on the game clock with Glynn using up all of its timeouts in the process. “I’ve done a poor job of coaching our football team,” Hidalgo said. “If I’d done a better job, we would have played better tonight. “We’ve gotta go back to work and coach our team. And, we’ve gotta play better.” The Terrors will take on Brunswick next Friday in the annual City Championship game. The Pirates won 21-14 at Greenbrier on Friday night in region action. They are now 4-1 overall and 3-0 in the league.
