Game Preview
The Red Terrors and Yellow Jackets will renew their longtime rivalry in the opening game for both teams.
The Terrors and Jackets have not played since the 2019 season when Glynn won 47-35 in Brunswick. A lot has changed at Wayne County since then.
Ken Cribb was the head coach for the Jackets at that time, but he is long gone from Jesup. Jaybo Shaw took over the program, but stayed only two years. He bolted early this year for another high school job in South Carolina.
The Jackets hired John Mohring from Savannah Country Day to replace Shaw who took Wayne to the state quarterfinals in his first season with the team.
The Jackets were hit hard by graduation after last season and are certainly in rebuilding mode coming into this season.
They will play a tough schedule, too. Their non-region games are against Glynn, Brunswick, Appling County, Pierce County and Richmond Hill. Pierce is the defending state champion in Class AA and is ranked No. 1 in the preseason while the Pirates from Baxley are ranked second in the Class AA poll.
Richmond Hill, which Glynn will play next week in its home opener, competes in Class AAAAAA, now the largest class in the state.
Then, the Jackets will face a rugged Region 1-AAAA schedule which includes Warner Robins, Ware County, New Hampstead, Benedictine and Perry. All those teams have won recent state titles with the exception of New Hampstead, and the Phoenix were a playoff team a year ago.
Rocky Hidalgo is starting his 11th season at Glynn. He has taken the Terrors to the playoffs in each of his previous 10 seasons.
Hidalgo began his Glynn career with a 40-20 victory over the Jackets at home back in 2014. Hidalgo is 6-3-1 in openers with the Terrors.
Glynn’s first win this season would be the 600th all-time win for the program.
