GLYNN DEFEATS BRUNSWICK IN OPENING VOLLEYBALL MATCHUP

Glynn Academy and Brunswick High squared off in girls volleyball Tuesday afternoon with the Lady Terrors topping their crosstown rivals 2-0 in the matchup that was a best-of-3 sets affair.
The match was played at Glynn and was held in the Glass Palace - which actually is the GA gym.
The first City Championship meeting of the season was also a Region 1-AAAAA contest for the local teams. GA and BHS are scheduled to play again on Sept. 10 at Brunswick Square Garden on the BHS campus.
The Tuesday meeting also was actually the season-opening match for the Lady Pirates who were scheduled to play at tri-match at home last week that got postponed when the storm that rolled through the state forced school and early athletic schedules to be re-arranged around Southeast Georgia.
Glynn got to play its opening two matches away from home as scheduled last week, and the Lady Terrors knocked off both Effingham and Richmond Hill by 2-1 tallies.
On Tuesday, GA took the opening set 25-14 to grab the upper hand.
“The first set, we came out strong,” said Glynn coach Mallorie Trautz.
The Lady Pirates, hoping to tie the match with a second-set win, jumped ahead in the next stanza and forced a Glynn timeout with the Lady Terrors trailing 6-4.
Glynn’s Izzy Counsil would bring her team back by serving three winning points for the Lady Terrors who forged a 7-7 tie before a kill by Natalie Koncul put the home team ahead, 8-7.
The rivals would exchange points for a stretch and were tied three different times including at 11-all. But Glynn actually would hold the lead the rest of the way after going up again.
Brunswick was within 15-14 before a Glynn surge put the Red and White ahead 20-14 on a soft kill by junior Riley Ferrell.
The Lady Pirates did get within 22-20 before GA ended the match. A Ferrell dink, followed by her block for a point and then a kill by Counsil sealed the victory for Glynn with a 25-20 win in the second set.
The Lady Terrors knew BHS was capable of playing them tough. The Lady Pirates aren’t the three-win team they were a year ago.
“We had a scrimmage with them in the preseason and we know they’re improved,” Trautz said. “They’ve been working really hard, and they’re much improved.”
BHS coach Jasmine Hubbard, named her school’s Teacher of the Year last week, likes the progress her team is making.
“We are excited about the regular season, although this didn’t turn out the way we wanted it to,” she said. “We have high hopes and expectations. We are excited and have a long season ahead. I’m pretty sure it’s going to get better.”
Playing well for BHS were Aubrey Rock, Alina Dent and Ashley Adair.
Brunswick is scheduled to play at home Wednesday versus Ware County. Match time is 6 p.m.
Glynn is slated to face off against Effingham again and Calvary Day on Thursday at Calvary Day in Savannah.
