Brunswick's Lowe goes back-to-back, Hicks also wins as Pirates make history

BRUNSWICK'S LOWE GOES BACK-TO-BACK, HICKS ALSO WINS AS PIRATES MAKE HISTORY

By Kevin Price For GCS Athletics The Brunswick High wrestling program made more history over the weekend at the Georgia High School Association Traditional State Championships in Macon. The Pirates of head coach Tom Bartolotta came away with two individual state championships which is a first-time accomplishment in Glynn County and they also had three wrestlers in the state finals in their own weight classes in the same state tournament which also is a first here in Glynn County. Brunswick senior Anthony Lowe capped a sterling high-school career with a second consecutive state crown while competing at 190 pounds. Lowe went 29-0 on the season for the Pirates and finished off his career in the prep ranks by winning 83 matches in a row. He finishes his four years with the Pirates with a 155-11 career record. “It has been one great high school career,” Bartolotta said. Also for the Pirates, junior Clayton Hicks won the state crown on Saturday in the 120-pound division. Hicks won his state final by decision with an 8-2 score. Hicks finished his campaign with a 56-5 record. “Clayton will look to repeat in 2025,” Bartolotta said. “He can become the first Glynn County wrestler in history to place in the state tournament four times.” Brunswick’s River Creel also was the runner-up at 285 pounds. Creel, a senior, reached the state final to face South Effingham’s Ashton Anderson. The match went into triple overtime before Anderson prevailed. Creel went 35-6 in his last season with the Pirates. “River has been a four-year standout in wrestling and football. We were very grateful to have River in the program,” Bartollotta said. Creel recently signed to play football at Georgia Military College. Also, BHS wrestler Thomas Clay placed this weekend, finishing fifth in his weight class. “Thomas is going to be a tremendous loss,” Bartolotta noted. The Pirates accumlated enough points to finish eight overall in the Class AAAAAA team standings.
