The high school basketball postseason actually begins tonight here in Glynn County.
The Brunswick High boys are set to face South Effingham at home this evening in a play-in game for the Region 2-AAAAAA tournament. Tip time is 6 p.m. at Brunswick Square Garden on the BHS campus.
Meantime, the Lady Pirates along with both Glynn Academy teams are awaiting matchups in the region semifinals next week.
Those games will be played at Glynn Academy on Wednesday. Both GA teams earned the opportunity to host the boys and girls tourneys as the top seeds.
The region tournament finals and consolation games will be held Friday at Glynn.
The top four teams in each tournament will go on to the Class AAAAAA state tournament. That means both GA teams and also the Brunswick girls are already assured of state tournament berths.
The Pirates are the No. 6 seed in the boys tournament after completing the regular season with an 11-14 overall record that included a 3-9 league record.
Brunswick finished its regular schedule winning five of its last six games including three of the final four region games. Two of those victories were against the South Effingham team the Pirates will play tonight. The Mustangs are 0-21 for the season. They were winless in all 12 region games.
The other late region victory for BHS was a road win at Effingham, the team the Pirates would face next should they win tonight’s play-in game.
Effingham finished as the No. 3 seed. The Rebels will face the Brunswick-South Effingham winner Monday in a quarterfinals game at home in Springfield.
Also on Monday, the other quarterfinal game in the boys tourney will be played at Effingham. It matches No. 4 seed Lakeside-Evans against No. 5 seed Evans.
The Red Terrors will draw the winner of that game Wednesday in the tournament semifinals. That semifinal is set for 8 p.m.
The other boys semifinal at 5 p.m. will feature Grovetown against the winner of Effingham vs. Brunswick/South Effingham.
In the girls tournament, the Friday night play-in game will be between Evans and Effingham. That game will be at Evans.
On Monday, the winner there will take on Lakeside-Evans, the No. 3 seed at Lakeside. The other quarterfinal game also will be at Lakeside and will be No. 4 seed Grovetown against No. 5 seed South Effingham.
On Wednesday, that tournament will also shift to the Glass Palace at Glynn. The Lady Terrors will take on the Grovetown-South Effingham winner at 6:30 p.m.
The Brunswick girls will be in the 3:30 semifinal against the Lakeside-Evans vs. Evans/Effingham winner.
