For GCS Athletics
Glynn Academy and Brunswick High are set to square off for the first time this season on the basketball hardwood.
The local rivals will take the court against each other Friday night at Glynn Academy.
The varsity girls game is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. tip with the boys contest slated to start at 8.
The varsity action will follow afternoon junior varsity games. The JV girls meet at 3:45 with the boys playing at 5:15.
The varsity games are also the Region 2-AAAAAA openers for the local squads.
The following is a capsule-look at the two varsity games:
Girls
Brunswick enters the meeting with Glynn sporting a 3-1 record early in the season.
The Lady Pirates won their season-opener on their home floor on Nov. 25 when they paraded past Woodville-Tompkins, 76-40.
BHS went to 2-0 three days later when it won big at Hilton Head Island. The final score was 69-31.
Brunswick dropped its next game, though, when it lost big at Lowndes, 69-37, last Friday night.
The Lady Pirates rebounded on Tuesday when they won at Richmond Hill, 52-48.
Brunswick is coming off a fine 2022-23 season when the Lady Pirates reached the Class AAAAAA Final Four as part of a 27-4 season.
The Lady Pirates lost stalwarts Shamya Flanders and Shane’ Jackson to graduation, but return several key players from that team including senior guards Shania Jones and Jerimyah Ramsey and senior forward Shanyece Quick.
Glynn is off to a 2-4 start. The Lady Terrors split their first two games, falling to Nease (Fla.) 56-49 before defeating Gainesville (Fla.) 47-38.
GA then dropped its next two, falling to Richmond Hill 45-38 and Ware County 53-48 before getting its second win of the season last Saturday at home over McIntosh County Academy by a 75-21 score.
The Lady Terrors lost 49-38 at Camden County on Tuesday.
Last season was the first with the Lady Terrors for head coach Myosha Leeper, a former GA standout. Her first squad was extremely young, but managed to finish fourth in the region tournament to earn a berth in the state tourney.
Sophomore guard Martin Davis is back to lead the Lady Terrors. She averaged 12.8 points a game last year and is currently scoring 13.2 a game.
Others to watch for Glynn include junior guard Kyra Page and sophomore guard-forward Aniyah Wright.
Boys
The Glynn boys will bring a 5-1 season worksheet into the game against the Pirates.
The Red Terrors won their first five games before suffering their first loss at Camden on Tuesday.
Glynn defeated the Wildcats 61-54 in the Jeff Davis Tip-off Tournament on Nov. 18 to get the season going. The team then reeled off wins over St. Andrew’s (52-48), Richmond Hill (66-58), Ware County (76-74) and McIntosh County Academy 54-43.
Glynn fell to Camden on Tuesday by a 57-40 count in Kingsland.
The Terrors are led by an experienced senior class that features 6-foot-2 guard Corey Fisher, fellow guard Zach King, power forward David Prince, who is 6-5 and committed to Georgia Tech in football, and 6-7 center Christian Davis.
The Pirates have won three of their first four outings. They opened with a 57-49 home loss to Woodville-Tompkins, but BHS has won its last three.
Brunswick won 64-47 at Hilton Head, 60-53 at Lowndes and 57-31 at Richmond Hill earlier this week.
The Pirates lost their leading scorer from a year ago, Camarion Johnson who is now playing at South Georgia Tech, and also lost key senior standout Riyon Rankin, who is now at the University of Georgia on a track and field scholarship.
But back for the Pirates are junior guards C.J. Battle and Caleb Butler, senior guard Daron Monroe, and 6-6, 240-pound sophomore forward Heze Kent who provides inside scoring and rebouding for BHS.
The Glynn and Brunswick teams are scheduled to meet twice in region action this season as usual. They will face off again on Friday night, Jan. 12, at Brunswick High.
