Game Preview: This will be the 80th meeting in the series between the local rivals.
The Pirates have won the last three contests in the yearly series. Last year, Brunswick rolled to a 55-21 victory over Glynn. The 55 points were the most points ever scored by a BHS team in the history of the rivalry.
Brunswick’s previous two wins were by much smaller margins. BHS won the 2021 game by a 17-14 score in overtime, getting a game-winning field goal from current kicker McClain Finneran.
The 2020 win by the Pirates has become known as the Miracle Between the Bricks as a Brunswick receiver caught a pass that was tipped by a Glynn defender and raced to the end zone for the winning score in the final seconds for a 24-21 victory.
That win by the Pirates ended a six-game winning streak by the Red Terrors in the series which dated back to the 2014 season when Rocky Hidalgo, Glynn’s current head coach, took over the GA program.
Friday’s game is once again the Region 2-AAAAAA opener for both teams in addition to deciding the city championship.
Brunswick comes into the game with a 2-1 record, having defeated Camden County (21-17) and Islands (63-0) with a 45-35 loss to St. Augustine (Fla.) in between its victories. The Pirates had won 23 straight regular-season games before that loss to St. Augustine in the Border Classic played at Glynn County Stadium.
Glynn is 3-1 on the season and is coming off a bye-week last week. The Terrors opened the season with a home win over Statesboro (20-0) before winning at McIntosh County Academy (14-6) and then falling at home to Camden County (44-13). The Terrors defeated Baker County (Fla.) 27-20 in the Border Classic before going into their open week.
In last week’s rout of Islands, the Pirates scored on each of their nine possessions in the game. Playing into the second quarter, BHS senior quarterback J.R. Elkins was 7-for-7 passing for 178 yards and a touchdown.
Elkins was the Glynn County Sports Hall of Fame Player of the Game last year for the Pirates in the game against Glynn as he threw for 190 yards and two touchdodwns.
Elkins has thrown a TD pass to senior wideout Terry Mitchell in each of the Pirates’ first three games this season.
Junior Jamarious Towns returned last week at running back for BHS after leaving the season opener against Camden early with an injury and missing the game against St. Augustine. He carried twice last Friday and scored on both runs.
He gives BHS a good one-two punch in the backfield along with fellow junior William Heck. Brunswick also will put 250-pound sophomore Heze Kent, a tight end-defensive end, in the backfield to take snaps or handoffs in its Pirates Package.
With the scoring frenzy last week, the Pirates now rank among the top 10 teams in Class 6A in scoring as they average just shy of 40 points a game.
Brunswick is allowing 20.6 points after three games.
The BHS defense is led by senior defensive lineman River Creel, senior linebackers Devin Smith and Mike Daniels and senior defensive back Tavion Gadson.
Smith is scheduled to announce his verbal commitment to either LSU or Kentucky on Friday.
Glynn’s offense has been handcuffed by the limited availability of junior running back Greg Peacock, the key cog in their run-first offense. Peacock missed the season opener with a lingering shoulder injury. He returned for the second game at McIntosh, but sufffered a sprained ankle in that game that continues to trouble him.
The decision was made to hold Peacock out of the Border Classic game. But, he was still hobbling in practice last week and his status for Friday’s game was questionable at the start of the week.
If Glynn’s top running back can’t go or can only handle a limited workload, the Terrors will likely involve multiple players in their ground game including Willie Butler, T.Y. Chisom, Jayden Ellis and D’Vontae Lang.
Obviously, the Terrors will look to get the ball in the hands of senior wideout David Prince, a Georgia Tech commit. Prince has five TD catches for the Terrors. He had two in the victory over Baker County.
The Glynn defense has forced 14 turnovers in four games.
Senior linebackers Peyton Parker and Trent Tankersley, who both missed the Baker County game with injuries, are expected to play Friday. Others to watch for the Glynn defense are fellow senior linebackers Gavin Wells and Lang as well as senior defensive backs Marshawn Turner, Bruce Edwards and Ryan Young.
Fans should be reminded that BHS is the visiting team for this game while Glynn is the home team.
