By Kevin Price
For GCS Athletics
The Glynn Academy and Brunswick High football teams will have dress rehearsals Friday night as they look toward their season openers for the 2023 season.
The Pirates will be at Glynn County Stadium for a three-team scrimmage that also will include McIntosh County Academy and Savannah Christian. The start time is 7 p.m.
The Red Terrors, meanwhile, will travel to Richmond Hill for a scrimmage against the Wildcats, an old region rival. Kickoff there is set for 7 p.m. as well.
Glynn opens the season at home next Friday against Statesboro.
Brunswick will begin its season on Aug. 25 at Camden County.
Tomorrow evening between the local stadium bricks, the Pirates will take on Savannah Christian for a quarter before then lining up against McIntosh for a quarter. The two visiting teams will then square off for a quarter.
After that, the sub-varsity teams for all three squads will scrimmage in abbreviated quarters to round out the night’s action.
The Pirates are beginning their second season under head coach Garrett Grady who led the team to a second straight unbeaten season and its second consecutive Region 2-AAAAAA title last fall. Brunswick fell in overtime in the first round of the state playoffs to Houston County in a matchup between top-10 teams in the state.
Players to watch for the Pirates include preseason all-state wide receiver Terry Mitchell and preseason all-state linebacker Devin Smith who has more than 30 scholarship offers. Earlier this summer, Smith published the five schools he is still considering on social media. Those were Alabama, LSU, South Carolina, Kentucky and Auburn.
McIntosh won Region 3-A last season before falling tough at home to Clinch County in the second round of the state playoffs.
Top players for the Buccaneers include quarterback/receiver Neo West and cornerback MJ Quarterman.
Savannah Christian will showcase one of the top players in the country. Junior defensive lineman Elijah Griffin is the consensus No. 2 junior recruit nationally and the No. 1 defensive lineman. His reported favorite colleges are Georgia and South Carolina.
In Richmond Hill, the hometown Wildcats will be tuning up for next week’s opener against Effingham as the Terrors work toward their opening game against Statesboro which Glynn defeated in overtime last season.
Rocky Hidalgo is going into his 10th season as head coach for the Terrors while Matt Lezotte is starting his ninth season with the Wildcats.
Glynn went 6-5 a year ago and finished third in Region 2-AAAAAA before falling in its playoff opener at Northside Warner Robins. Richmond Hill went 3-7 as it competed in Class AAAAAAA for the first time with a young squad.
Players to watch for Glynn are junior running back Greg Peacock and junior receiver David Prince along with senior linebacker Peyton Parker.
Key players for Richmond Hill include junior quarterback Kirk Scott, senior free safety/receiver Nick Bliss and junior linebacker Gabe Bauman.
