TERRORS ARE NO. 1 AGAIN IN GOLF

By Kevin Price For GCS Athletics The Glynn Academy boys found their way back to the top of the heap. On Tuesday, the Red Terrors claimed the Class AAAAAA state golf championship with a five-shot victory on Jekyll Island to claim their first title since the 2011 season. Glynn finished the two-day, 36-hole tournament at 593 on Jekyll Island’s Pine Lakes Course while holding off runner-up Gainesville which made a late run at the championship. The state crown was the 12th all-time for the Terrors. It also was the first for the program under head coach Mike Zito. Glynn also claimed the individual title in the tournament as GA senior Williamson Mosher won medalist honors with a 3-under 141 score. The Glynn golfer grabbed a one-shot lead in the first roiund on Monday when he opened with a 69. He would shoot even-par 72 to keep the lead after Tuesday’s concluding round. The Terrors also led as a team after the first 18 holes on Monday when they carded a 293 score for a nine-shot lead over Gainesville heading into the second round. While Mosher continued to lead the way for Glynn, junior Hank Holcomb would finish tied for fourth overall as he recorded a 147 score over the two rounds while senior Shep Davenport finished 15th at 151 for the Terrors. Also for GA, senior Ellis Long finished at 158 over the 36 holes and senior Grady Sanders closed his career with a 159 score after missing much of the season with a broken femur sustained in a car accident. Glynn’s assistant coach again this season was Tim Hall.
