GA GIRLS GOLF GOES BACK-TO-BACK
By Kevin Price
The Glynn Academy girls golf team claimed another state championship on Tuesday.
The Lady Terrors dominated on their way to a second straight Class AAAAAA state title on Jekyll Island as they shot a two-round 480 score to win by 16 strokes over Alpharetta on the Indian Mound Course at the Jekyll Island Golf Club.
Last May, Glynn shot 486 to win and posted an 11-shot victory on the same course.
The latest title was the 10th overall for the GA girls who won their first state championship back in 2002, five years after the Georgia High School Association began offering golf as a championship sport for girls.
Glynn has now won back-to-back state crowns three times. The Lady Terrors actually won four in a row from 2004-2007 and then won in consecutive years in 2010-11. Now, they again have two in a row in 2022-23.
This year, GA grabbed the overnight lead when it opened play on Monday with a 244 score to hold a six-shot cushion going into Tuesday’s second 18. In the second round, the Lady Terrors ran away from the competition as they carded a 236 to post the double-digit victory.
Sophomore Emma Hill led the way for the Lady Terrors as she finished as the tournament runner-up, closing with a 73 on Tuesday to shoot 152 over the two days. She carded a 79 in the first round. Hill finished just a stroke behind individual champion Mahima Vurupatur from Alpharetta who made a 25-foot birdie putt on the last hole to claim medalist honors by a stroke.
Also for Glynn, senior Chanley Box shot 78 on Tuesday while playing with sprained ligaments in one of her hands and finished at 164 while sophomore Elyse Burney also shot 164 which included a 79 in the first round.
Senior Charley Podlesny and junior Hunter Bisesi also played for the Lady Terrors.
Glynn’s coaches are Kip Hall and Pete Irby.
