The Brunswick High boys basketball team is set to play for a spot in the Region 2-AAAAAA championship game on Thursday night in Augusta.
The Pirates, still ranked No. 10 in the state, will face off against Lakeside-Evans in one of two semifinal games to be played at Grovetown.
The other semifinal on Thursday features fourth-ranked Grovetown against Evans. Grovetown is the top seed after winning the regular-season region crown. Evans is the No. 5 seed. The Knights defeated No. 4 seed Effingham in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.
The semifinal winners will play Saturday night at Grovetown for the region championship while the two losing teams will meet in Saturday’s consolation game to play for the third- and fourth-seeds for the upcoming Class AAAAAA state tournament which starts next week.
The Pirates and Lakeside have already played two good ones this season when they met in region play. Brunswick (20-5) knocked off the Panthers 73-61 at home on Jan. 6 and got past Lakeside 65-61 in double-overtime whey they played again in Augusta on Jan. 20.
Should Brunswick get by the Panthers (17-9) again in the region semifinals, the Pirates are likely looking at a third game against defending state champion Grovetown in the finals on Saturday. The Warriors (16-8) won all 12 of their region games during the season including two over the Pirates.
Brunswick actually led Grovetown by double-figures in the fourth quarter when they faced off in Brunswick Square Garden two Fridays ago, but the Warriors tied the game on a dunk just before the buzzer to end regulation and force overtime. Grovetown went on to win 70-67.
Should the Pirates face Evans in either the finals or consolation game on Saturday, BHS defeated the Knights both times in the regular season. Brunswick won here 78-61 in early January before winning 63-51 at Evans on Jan. 21
Brunswick needs to win Thursday’s semifinal to assure itself a home game in the opening round of the state tournament as all first- and second-seeds host games in the first round.
On Tuesday night, the Glynn Academy boys saw their season come to an end as they fell 58-57 to Lakeside which advanced to face Brunswick in the semifinals. The Red Terrors (12-14) fell way behind early as they trailed 40-13 at halftime, but outscored the Panthers 44-18 in the second half as their comeback-bid fell short.
The Terrors were the No. 6 seed coming into the tournament. They defeated South Effingham at home last Friday by 53-48 to earn a spot in the quarterfinals Tuesday at Lakeside-Evans.
