By Kevin Price For GCS Athletics The Brunswick High girls basketball team toppled Glynn Academy 63-23 Wednesday night in the semifinals of the Region 2-AAAAAA tournament at the Brunswick Square Garden. The Lady Pirates will now move on to the championship game set for Friday in their gym against South Effingham. Tip time will be 7:30 p.m. The Lady Terrors, meantime, will now play in the tournament consolation game at 6 p.m on Friday against Grovetown which fell to South Effingham 33-28 in the other semifinal on Wednesday. All four teams playing Friday are guaranteed spots in the Class AAAAAA state tournament which opens next week. Brunswick, the top seed for the tournament, earned the right to host the semifinals and finals as the regular-season region champion. The Lady Pirates (23-3) are ranked fifth in the state and have now won all 13 games they have played against a region opponent this season. BHS went 12-0 in the region during the regular season. Wednesday’s win over rival Glynn was the third this season for the Lady Pirates, and all three victories were by more than 40 points. The Lady Terrors (8-18) reached the semifinals with an upset Monday night over Lakeside-Evans when they won 49-47 on Lakeside’s home floor to advance and qualify for state as one of the region’s final four teams. Glynn came into the tournament as the No. 5 seed while Lakeside was the No. 4 seed. The Lady Terrors lost to Lakeside by 21 points in early January and then by only eight points in late January when they met again in region play in Augusta. Looking to Friday’s game, the Lady Pirates have already beaten South Effingham by 61-39 and 51-43. Glynn fell to Grovetown 64-32 in Augusta before beating the Lady Warriors 50-47 on Feb. 4 in Brunswick.
