By Kevin Price For GCS Athletics The Brunswick High and Glynn Academy wrestling teams competed in the Area 2-AAAAAA traditional meet this weekend hosted by Effingham in Springfield. And with the Pirates finishing second overall in the team standings and Glynn finishing just behind Brunswick in third, both local teams qualified several wrestlers for the upcoming state sectionals in their respective weight classes. The top four finishers in each weight class advanced to sectionals. For the Pirates, 10 wrestlers will compete this weekend in the sectional tournament while 12 Red Terrors will also compete in sectionals. The local wrestlers will be looking to once again finish in the top four in their weight divisions and advance to the state championship meet which is coming up in Macon. South Effingham came away as the team champion for the area traditional meet after also earlier winning the duals title. The teams were awarded points based on the finishes of their individual competitors in the different weight classes to determine their team scores. The Mustangs also won the Class AAAAAA duals championship for the program’s first state crown. Brunswick was also second in area duals, but the Pirates finished second in their sectional and did not reach the final eight-team bracket for the state championship tournament. BHS fell to eventual state runner-up North Forsyth in the sectional championship. Glynn was also third in area duals, but did go on to win its sectional before placing fourth in the state championship meet.
