GA, BHS COMPETING IN AREA TRADITIONAL TOURNEY

Glynn Academy and Brunswick High are set to wrestle this weekend in the Area 2-AAAAAA traditional meet.
The area competition will be hosted by Effingham in Springfield.
This will be the second area meet of the season as the prep wrestling in Georgia has transitioned to the traditional format after earlier deciding the state champions in team duals.
The duals format pits team against team with the results between wrestlers in each weight class counting toward a team’s total score. The team with the most points wins a given match.
The top four teams in each area tournament advanced to state sectionals before the winning teams in the eight sectional tournaments went on to compete for the state championship in each of Georgia’s classifications.
Brunswick finished second in the area duals while Glynn was third. South Effingham won the area duals meet. The Pirates reached the championship match of their state sectional, but fell to eventual state runner-up North Forsyth and didn’t make the final eight-team bracket.
Glynn won its sectional to reach the final eight, and the Red Terrors ended up finishing fourth in state duals. South Effingham also won its sectional and ended up claiming the state championship which was the first for the Mustangs program.
In traditional wrestling, teams field competitors in the various weight classes. The top four finishers in each weight division will advance to sectionals. There, they will have the chance to make the state tournament which is coming up in Macon. That’s where all the individual state champions will be crowned.
Wrestlers earn points for their teams based on their finish in their respective weight classes, so the team with the most points in the area and state tournaments will be declared champions, too.
BHS wrestlers to watch are Anthony Lowe who is 41-0 this season at 215 pounds, Stunner Hutchinson, Comari Cone, Titus Washington, Blake Etheridge, Thomas Clay, Sebastian Hutchinson and River Creel.
Last week, Lowe was awarded the Nigel Hamilton Spirit Award for Outstanding Attitude and Performance as Brunswick hosted the first Port City Nigel Hamilton Memorial tournament.
Glynn wrestlers to watch are Jack Lombardo, William Bruce, Zion Gervais, Caleb Cross, John Sams and Lucas Ketcham.
