SOCCER PREVIEW: GA AND BHS TEAMS BEGIN NEW SEASONS
By Kevin Price
For GCS Athletics
A new soccer season is here for Glynn Academy and Brunswick High.
With the Brunswick and Glynn teams going into action, here is a look at the boys and girls teams at both local schools.
GA Boys
The Red Terrors are coming off a fine 2022 season when they reached the Elite Eight of the Class AAAAAA state playoffs after going unbeaten in the regular season.
The Terrors lost a lot of offensive firepower to graduation as Gavin Swafford and Jonathan Sasser were both senior salwarts on last spring's team.
Swafford established a new single-season scoring record at Glynn with 35 goals while Sasser booted home 15 goals as well. The two players accounted for almost half of Glynn's goals last season.
But the Terrors will still aim to win the Region 2 title and make a strong run in the state tournament under longtime head coach Bobby Brockman who reached 400 career wins last season.
Players to watch for Glynn are captains Harrison Lee, John William Barbee and Keller Lopez Orellana.
Glynn opened the season Tuesday with a 7-0 win over Wayne County.
GA Girls
The Lady Terrors went 14-3 last season and finished second in the region before going on to reach the second round of the state tournament.
Glynn will field a young team this season, but the Lady Terrors have a strong group of players in their junior class.
Players to watch are team captain and senior Kennedy Flores. Fellow captains include juniors Capers Childs and Eliza Meader.
Tom Lemmon returns as the team's head coach.
Glynn beat Wayne County 10-1 in its season opener.
BHS Boys
The Pirates are beginning their third season under coach Enrique Power who led the team to state playoff appearances in his first two seasons.
Brunswick has two preseason all-state players on its roster. They are center half Allen Antah and left back JB Santos.
Overall, the Pirates are young, but Powers likes the potential for the team especially as he eyes the future, too.
Another top player for BHS is senior goalkeeper and captain Jerry Martinez who is currently playing right back for the Pirates. got
The Pirates opened their season with a 2-1 victory over Appling County on Monday.
BHS Girls
The Lady Pirates went 5-12-1 last season and will be out to improve on that won-loss ledger this season.
BHS dropped its opening match by a 1-0 tally to Appling County on Monday.
Players to watch for Brunswick are Lourdes Royal and Kaylin Herrin.
The Lady Pirates are now playing under new head coach Kim Medders.
