BHS TEAMS TOP GLYNN IN HOOPS

By Kevin Price For GCS Athletics The Brunswick High and Glynn Academy basketball teams squared off for the second time this season Tuesday night at Brunswick High on the night before the start of second semester for Glynn County Schools. Playing these matchups at BHS, the Brunswick squads both won just as they did when the teams faced off at Glynn in early December in the Region 2-AAAAAA openers for both schools. The Brunswick girls rolled to a 71-25 win in the varsity opener on Tuesday while the Pirates prevailed 57-43 in the nightcap. These were actually the second league games for both schools as they now have played their two region games against each other before playing anyone else in the region. In the girls game, the Lady Terrors (2-10, overall, 0-2 region) jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but after an early Brunswick timeout, the Lady Pirates would take charge as they went on to open up a 21-6 advantage before the end of the opening quarter and a 41-11 cushion by halftime. Substituting freely throughout the game, BHS (10-3, 2-0), the defending region champion which made a run to the Elite 8 in the state tournament last year, played everyone who dressed out for the game. Freshman center Reagan Hicks ended up leading the victors with 12 points while also notching 8 rebounds. Hicks was named the Glynn County Sports Hall of Fame Player of the Game. BHS senior guard/forward Jamya West scored 11 points in the win as did junior forward Shanyece Quick. Junior guard Shania Jones hit for 10 for Brunswick. Senior leaders Shamya Flanders and Shane Jackson scored 6 and 8 points, respectively, in limited minutes. For GA, freshman guard Martin Davis led the scoring with 8 points. In the boys game, Brunswick scored the first 10 points, but Glynn (8-6, 0-2) erased its early double-digit deficit as it got back within 10-7 quickly. The Pirates would lead 19-18 after a couple of tied scores following the first eight minutes. The game stayed close throughout the second and third frames. BHS (10-2, 2-0) led by only one still at 31-30 at the halftime break, and the local rivals were deadlocked at 37-all following a low-scoring third frame. But Brunswick started the fourth on fire from the field, going on a 13-0 spurt to begin the final quarter to take a 50-37 lead which it wouldn’t give up as the Pirates outscored the Terrors 20-6 in the fourth. Both Riyon Rankin and Craig Battle made some big outside shots for the Pirates early in the fourth as Brunswick ran away from Glynn. Rankin, a senior forward, finished with 15 points, 8 rebounds, two blocks and four assists for the Pirates. He was named the Glynn County Sports Hall of Fame Player of the Game. Battle, who went cold in the third, came back to life in the fourth. He ended up leading the Pirates with 16 points in the win. A sophomore, he started at point guard for the Pirates. BHS won despite getting just 9 points from senior Camarion Johnson who led all scorers coming into the game with an average of 18.5 points a game. Sophomore guard Caleb Butler added 11 points for Brunswick. Senior guard Tyi Ivey led GA with 15 points.
