The Glynn Academy and Brunswick High basketball teams will meet for the first time in the 2022-23 season on Friday night at Glynn Academy.
The girls game is set for a 6:30 p.m. start with the boys contest scheduled for 8 p.m.
The games are the Region 2-AAAAAA openers for both schools.
The Lady Pirates enter the matchup against the Lady Terrors with a 3-2 record. Brunswick, ranked 10th in Class AAAAAA after starting higher in the polls, lost its opening game to now third-ranked Rockdale County before winning back-to-back games over Woodville-Tompkins and then falling to close to Lowndes.
The Brunswick girls got back on the winning track Tuesday with a home triumph over former region rival Richmond Hill.
BHS is led by seniors Shamya Flanders and Shane’ Jackson, both post players. Flanders was the region player of the year last season while Jackson was also a first-team all-region selection a year ago for the Lady Pirates who won the region championship before advancing to the state quarterfinals.
Glynn is an inexperienced team to start the season. The Lady Terrors (1-4) lost their first three games before defeating Tattnall County last Saturday at home when the new floor inside the GA gym was dedicated to longtime former Glynn girls coach Theresa Adams.
The Lady Terrors fell at home on Tuesday to former region foe Bradwell Institute which is ranked in Class AAAAA.
The boys game matches the 5-1 Red Terrors against the 3-1 Pirates.
Glynn opened the season with four straight wins including a 45-41 victory over Richmond Hill before falling 56-54 at home this past Saturday to Tattnall. The Terrors rebounded with a 71-44 rout of Bradwell at home on Tuesday.
Players to watch for Glynn include senior guards Tyi Ivey and Shane Payne, junior center David Prince and junior guard Corey Fisher.
The Pirates won their opening game at home over Woodville-Tompkins before losing to the Wolverines three nights later in a rematch in Savannah. Brunswick then knocked off Lowndes last Friday at home before rolling past Richmond Hill 58-41 on Tuesday at home.
The Pirates are led by senior guard Camarion Johnson who is averaging 18.3 points in the team’s first four games and senior forward Riyon Rankin who is averaging 14.3 points and 9.5 rebounds. Rankin won the Class AAAAAA high jump last spring.
The BHS boys are also slated to host Hilton Head Island on Saturday night.
Glynn and Brunswick will meet a second time in their annual City Championship series on Jan. 3. Those games will be played at BHS.
