GA GIRLS LEAD LOCAL CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS TO STATE

Three local cross country teams will compete this weekend in the Class AAAAAA state championship meet in Carrollton.
Those will be the Glynn Academy boys and girls and also the Brunswick High girls team.
The Glynn girls will go to the state meet as the Region 2-AAAAAA champion after claiming the league crown last Thursday at the region meet held at the College of Coastal Georgia here in Brunswick.
The Lady Pirates also qualified for state as the fourth-place team in the region meet.
The GA boys finished fourth to also reach the state competition. The Brunswick boys just missed a state berth as they finished fifth at region.
The top four teams in the league meets advance to state. The other girls teams qualifying were runner-up South Effingham and third-place finisher Lakeside-Evans.
Evans won the boys region title. Lakeside-Evans was second and South Effingham took third.
In the girls meet, Glynn freshman Maura Thomas won the individual title, finishing the 5-kilometer race in 20 minutes, 23 seconds. Glynn’s Lexi Alberson, a senior, followed in second as she finished in 20:39. Also for GA, Caroline Wessel (fifth) and Abigail Winford (8th) finished in the top 10.
For Brunswick, Emma Kirkland led the way by finishing seventh. She finished the race in 21:58. Also for BHS, Sydney Haywood finished 10th in 22:26 to give the Lady Pirates two runners in the top 10.
In the boys race, Jack Roberts led Glynn as he finished seventh overall in 17:02 while Maxwell Wakeland finished ninth for Glynn in 17:10.
Brunswick’s top runner was Zachry Reed who finished 14th in 17:48. Ryan Thomas followed for BHS in 18:11 to finish 21st.
The boys winner was Tyler Phillips from South Effingham who crossed the finish line in 16:13.
