Game Preview
Brunswick High will be looking to win its third game in a row over the rival Red Terrors on Friday night.
That would allow the Pirates to retire the current city trophy which is a tradition in the rivalry. When one of the schools wins three games in a row in the series, that school gets to keep the current city championship trophy forever, whereas the trophy would normally alternate between the schools from year to year based on who wins each season.
BHS has not won three straight games in the series since doing so when it won five in a row from 2006-10.
Glynn had won six games in a row over the Pirates until BHS won 24-21 in the 2020 game which has been tagged the Miracle Between the Bricks as Brunswick scored the game-winning touchdown on a long pass that was tipped by the Terrors in the open field before BHS receiver Tyrease Jones caught the ball and ran the rest of the way for the winning score.
The Pirates made it two in a row last year when sophomore kicker McClain Finneran made a field goal in overtime to lift Brunswick to a 17-14 win.
Brunswick comes into this season’s matchup with a perfect 4-0 record after wins over Andrew Jackson (23-13), Camden County (16-10), Bolles (20-3) and Islands (49-0).
Glynn is 2-2 on the season. The Terrors topped Statesboro (43-42 in overtime) and McIntosh County Academy (22-12) before falling at Camden (37-7) and losing to Creekside (21-20) in the Border Classic at GC Stadium two weeks ago.
Friday’s game will be the Region 2-AAAAAA opener for both teams.
Brunswick is the defending region champion after going unbeaten in the league last fall while posting a 10-0 regular-season record. The Pirates won at home in the opening round of the playoffs before losing their second-round game, also at home, to Dacula.
Glynn finished fourth in the region last season to make the playoffs. The Terrors lost in the first round at Langston Hughes which went on to play Buford in the state championship game. Hughes is the favorite for the Class AAAAAA state title this season.
The Pirates will also be putting their 17-game winning streak in the regular season on the line Friday against the Terrors. They closed the 2020 season by winning their final three games on the season ledger following their region loss to Richmond Hill. BHS then won all 10 games on its schedule last season and has won its first four games this season.
Glynn will be looking to avoid its first three-game losing streak since the middle of the 2019 season when they fell to Ware County, Camden County and Richmond Hill before defeating Brunswick 24-21 to end the skid.
Brunswick’s defense has been impressive early on. The Pirates have given up only three touchdowns in the first four games and have held their last two opponents out of the end zone. Bolles kicked a field goal in the opening half against the Pirates two weeks ago and Islands didn’t score at all last Friday night which was the BHS Homecoming game.
Last Friday, the Pirates overwhelmed the winless Sharks. Islands finished with 19 passing yards and minus-9 rushing yards to end up with just 10 total net yards in the game which was played with a running clock after halftime. Brunswick led 35-0 at the break as it scored on five of seven possessions in the first half.
Glynn’s best offensive performance was back in the opener at Statesboro. The Terrors trailed 21-7 at halftime and 28-14 in the third quarter, but rallied to force overtime. They were actually down 35-28 inside the final two minutes, but marched 60 yards to score and forge a 35-35 deadlock in the final seconds.
Turnovers doomed the Terrors two weeks ago in the Border Classic. Three fumbles led to touchdowns by Creekside which weathered the hard rain and nasty playing conditions better than Glynn. The Terrors also misfired on an extra-point try and a possible game-winning field goal attempt late.
