BHS HOSTING ISLANDS FOR HOMECOMING

By Kevin Price For GCS Athletics Kickoff A look at Brunswick High’s next game: Opponent: Islands High When: 7:30 p.m. Friday Where: Glynn County Stadium TV/Radio: continentalsports.com, 107.7 FM Records: BHS 3-0, 0-0 Region 2-AAAAAA; IH 0-4, 0-0 Region 3-AAAA Last year/All-time: BHS won 41-6. That was the first-ever meeting between the schools. Noteworthy: Islands is a public school that is part of the Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools systems. It opened in 2010 to fill the need for a high school to service a growing number of students on Whitemarsh, Wilmington, Talahi and Tybee islands. The school is located on Whitemarsh Island. Islands started a junior varsity football team in 2013 and began playing varsity football the following year. Game Preview The Pirates are big favorites in this one on Friday night. Set for their annual Homecoming game, the Pirates enter the game coming off a 20-3 victory last Friday over perennial power Bolles from Jacksonville in the first Borders Classic hosted by Glynn County Schools at Glynn County Stadium. Brunswick is 3-0 overall with wins over Andrew Jackson, also from Jacksonville, in the season opener, and Camden County in Week 2. Those games also were played in the local stadium. Islands is struggling early. The Sharks are still looking for their first victory in the 2022 season after four losses in their first four games. They have scored only 22 total points in those games combined, falling 49-6 to Calvary Day, 69-6 to Savannah Christian, 24-0 to South Effingham and 14-10 to Bradwell Institute. BHS has only given up 26 total points in its first three games. That’s 8.67 points a game which is the third-lowest total in Class AAAAAA currently. Last year, Brunswick defeated Islands 41-6 in a Thursday night game played in a hard rain at GC Stadium. The field was a muddy mess following the game. The Pirates scored on four of their first five possessions in last year’s game and led 31-6 going into halftime. Brunswick has won 16 straight regular-season games going back to the 2020 season. This will be the final non-region game for the Pirates. They will begin region play next week against Glynn Academy in the annual City Championship Game. This also will be the final non-region game for Islands. The Sharks will have an open date next week before playing Southeast Bulloch in the first of their five region games to close out the regular season.
