TERRORS TAKE TUMBLE AT CAMDEN

By Kevin Price For GCS Athletics Glynn Academy dropped its first game of the season Friday night as the Red Terrors fell 37-7 to Camden County at Chris Gilman Stadium in Kingsland. The Terrors (2-1) opened the campaign with an exciting 43-42 victory in overtime at Statesboro before knocking off McIntosh County Academy 22-12 last week at Glynn County Stadium. But on Friday, they trailed the Wildcats 17-0 at halftime and were in danger of getting blanked on the scoreboard until scoring late in the game. The win was the first of the season for Camden which got upset 13-10 by Columbia High out of Decatur in the season opener at home. Last Friday night, the Wildcats lost 16-10 to Brunswick inside GC Stadium. Also, with the win over Glynn, Camden ended a nine-game losing streak that dated back to last season when the Wildcats won their first four games before dropping their last seven. One of the team’s wins came over Glynn in Brunswick. The Terrors went into Friday’s game in Kingsland with a chance to open a season with three on-field wins for the first time since the 2011 season. Glynn will look to bounce back next week when it plays at home on the opening night of the first Border Classic next Thursday. Against Camden, Glynn had a pass intercepted on its opening drive of the game on the Wildcats’ side of the field. Camden drove to the GA 7-yard line and had the ball first-and-goal, but the Glynn defense would keep the Wildcats out of the end zone and force them to kick a field goal for an early 3-0 lead. The next time the Terrors had the ball, they attempted a fake punt on fourth down near midfield, but the play was stuffed by the Wildcats. Camden couldn’t capitalize on the good field position, however. The Wildcats missed another field-goal attempt from 45 yards out as time expired in the first quarter. Early in the second period, though, Camden would drive 59 yards for its first touchdown as Brayden Ritz dashed 15 yards for the score on third-and-8. The point-after kick made it 10-0 with just under six minutes left in the first half. The Terrors started their next drive as their own 44 following a nice kick return by sophomore Greg Peacock. Glynn moved the chains when a third-and-9 pass from Tyler Devlin to David Prince went for a gain of 15 to keep the possession alive. Glynn faced fourth-and-7 from the 37 with the clock approaching the minute-mark and kept its offense on the field. A pass-play on fourth down backfired when the ball was picked off by Camden’s Tyre Young around the line to gain. Young would hotfoot to the Glynn end zone for a touchdown that gave the Wildcats a 17-0 lead and all the momentum going into the halftime break. Young also had the earlier interception for Camden at the start of the game. The Wildcats proceeded to pull away from Glynn after intermission. They scored on their second possession of the third quarter with junior quarterback Mason Robinson throwing a 26-yard touchdown strike over the top of the defense for a 23-0 advantage. Early in the fourth quarter, Camden only had to go 15 yards to go up 30-0 on a 3-yard TD run by junior fullback Jaden Dailey. A punt return of 50 yards by senior Army commit Jake Lindsey gave the Wildcats the ball deep in GA territory. Camden scored for the final time with just over four minutes left on a 9-yard run by Dailey. The Terrors avoided the shutout when Hank Noonan ran 76 yards for a touchdown on the ensuing offensive series for Glynn. The opponent for the Terrors this coming Thursday will be Creekside (Fla.) as the three-day pigskin feast featuring Georgia vs. Florida matchups begins.
