TERRORS GOING TO CAMDEN TO TAKE ON CATS
A look at Glynn Academy’s next game:
Opponent: Camden County
When: 7:30 p.m. Friday
Where: Chris Gilman Stadium, Kingsland
Radio: 102.5 FM
Records: GA 2-0, 0-0 Region 2-AAAAAA; CC 0-2, 0-0 Region1-AAAAAAA

Last year/All-time: Camden won 46-21 at Glynn County Stadium; Camden leads the series 17-5 all-time
Noteworthy: Stump Mitchell was an All-State running back for Camden in the 1970s. He played college football at The Citadel, where he was a two-time Southern Conference selection. As a senior in 1980, Mitchell was the second-leading rusher in NCAA Division I behind Heisman Trophy winner George Rogers and was voted a Third-Team All-American by the Associated Press.
He was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1981 and played for the team through the 1989 season before ending his NFL career with the Kansas City Chiefs in 1990.
Mitchell has been a coach at several places and has coached running backs for several NFL teams. He is currently coaching running backs for the Cleveland Browns.
The Skinny: The Red Terrors enter Friday’s game with a 2-0 season record, owning wins over Statesboro (43-42 in overtime) and McIntosh County Academy.
Camden lost its opening game 13-10 to Columbia High from Decatur at home and fell last Friday 16-10 to Brunswick at Glynn County Stadium.
The loss to Columbia was deemed the biggest upset in the state in Week 1 by Georgia High School Football Daily. Last week, the Wildcats had the ball inside the Brunswick 10-yard line in the final moments with a chance to tie the game and possibly pull out a victory with an extra-point kick, but the Pirates made a defensive stop to hold on for the win.
This is the second stint in Camden for head coach Jeff Herron who built the Wildcats into a state and national power in his first go-round with the program. From 2000-2012, he led Camden to a 154-20 record while winning 12 region titles and three state crowns in 13 seasons.
Last year in Herron’s return to the program, Camden finished just 4-7 which was his first losing season in 30 years as a head coach.
A loss to the Terrors on Friday would give the Wildcats their first 0-3 start to a season since the 2016 campaign when they finished 2-7.
That year, their third loss to open the season was a 56-7 loss to Glynn Academy which went on to play in the state quarterfinals.
The last time Herron started a season 0-2 was 1989 in his first season as a head coach at Walton. Herron has never begun a season as a head coach with three straight losses.
Herron was 4-0 against Glynn in his first stint with the Wildcats who won three of those games in shutout-fashion.
Players to watch for Camden’s defense include senior linebacker Jake Lindsey. He is the son of the team’s defensive coordinator Jon Lindsey and is committed to Army.
Other players to watch are senior linebacker Ian Pederson and junior linebacker Cooper Thornhill along with junior defensive end DeNigel Cooper.
Camden is deep in the offensive backfield, but the team’s primary ballcarriers last week against Brunswick were junior fullback Jayden Dailey, senior halfback Quan Floyd and fellow senior halfback Brayden Ritz.
Senior halfback Deonte Cole, the top returning rusher, had only one carry in the team’s opener due to injury and did not play last week. He isn’t expected to play this week.
Glynn has a chance to start a season 3-0 for the first time since the 2018 season with a victory on Friday. The Terrors actually lost their opener that season to Fort Dorchester (S.C.) but were later awarded a forfeit win.
The last time the Terrors actually started a season with three straight wins on the field was 2011 when Glynn opened with four consecutive victories.
Glynn defeated Camden in both 2016 and 2017 but has lost the last four meetings with the Wildcats.
