BETWEEN THE BRICKS: BHS SET FOR CAT FIGHT WITH CAMDEN

A look at Brunswick High’s next game: Opponent: Camden County When: 7:30 p.m. Friday Where: Glynn County Stadium TV/Radio: , 107.7 FM Records: BHS 1-0, 0-0 Region 2-AAAAAA; CC - 0-1 0-0 Region 1-AAAAAAA Last week: BHS won 23-13 over Andrew Jackson (Jacksonville) at home; Camden lost 13-10 at home to Columbia High (Decatur) Last year/All-time: Teams did not play; Camden leads 26-11-1 Noteworthy: The 1999 BHS team which didn’t lose a game until falling to Lowndes on a Saturday night in Valdosta in the Class AAAA state title game defeated Camden 24-6 down in Camden that same season. The night before the Pirates played in the state title game, Jeff Herron led his last Oconee County team to a victory over Mount Zion-Jonesboro in the Class AAA title game to complete a 15-0 season. Herron would take over at Camden the next season and lead the Wildcats to unprecedented success which included three state championships in his first stint with the program. The Skinny: The emotions were much different for the Pirates and Wildcats following their opening games last Friday night. In Brunswick, the Pirates celebrated a victory under new head coach Garrett Grady following their first game on the new field-turf at Glynn County Stadium. Down south in Kingsland, the Wildcats were stunned after falling 13-10 to Columbia High out of metro Atlanta in their opener. This was the same team they defeated 31-0 last season at Chris Gilman Stadium in Kingsland in a weather-shortened game. Thing is, Columbia improved dramatically throughout last season, going on to finish 8-4 while losing in round two of the Class AA playoffs. Camden finished 4-7 a year ago in head coach Jeff Herron’s return to the program, losing several games late in the fourth quarter after leading. A younger Camden team sputtered offensively last Friday and allowed Columbia to dominate possession, and the result was a shocking loss that became the state’s biggest upset in the opening week. Camden has had Brunswick’s number in recent years. The teams haven’t played since 2019 when Camden won 48-20 at home. The Wildcats also won 37-0 in Brunswick in 2018. The Pirates won the 2017 meeting between the teams 43-27 in Kingsland. That stands as Brunswick’s only win in the series since the above-mentioned win by the Pirates in 1999, a span of 11 games. Herron was Camden’s coach in seven of those wins. He was 2-0 against former BHS coach John Willis, 4-0 against Maurice Freeman and 1-0 versus Victor Floyd. Herron’s successor, Welton Coffey, now the Camden athletic director, had the other four wins. Brunswick’s victory under Sean Pender in 2017 was against Bob Sphire’s first Camden team. Last Friday, the BHS defense held Andrew Jackson to 200 total yards. Senior Jayden Drayton scored on a punt return and also caught a touchdown pass from junior quarterback J.R. Elkins who made his first varsity start for the Pirates. Camden’s top returning running back Deonte Cole was limited to one carry last week due to injury.
