TERRORS TOP MCINTOSH, COME OUT THE GATE 2 AND 0

By Kevin Price For GCS Athletics Glynn Academy made it two in a row to start the 2022 season with a 22-12 victory Thursday night over McIntosh County Academy at home. The Red Terrors were coming off a thrilling 43-42 overtime when at Statesboro last Friday in their season opener when they pulled off a two-point play on a fake-field goal after matching the home team with a touchdown on its possession in the extra period. Thursday’s game was the first official game for the Terrors on the new field turf at Glynn County Stadium. Glynn played a scrimmage on the field two weeks ago against Richmond Hill in advance of last week’s opener. Both the Terrors and Buccaneers will be back at the local stadium in two weeks when they play Thursday night games to open the first Border War Classic. The Bucs play the opening game against West Nassau (Fla.) and Glynn will play the second game in the doubleheader on Sept. 8 against Creekside (Fla.). The three-day high-school football showcase will continue with two games Friday and three games Saturday, pitting more Southeast Georgia teams against Northeast Florida schools. Following Thursday’s game against the Bucs, GA coach Rocky Hidalgo was more ho-hum than usual. “We did some things better,” he said, comparing Game 1 and Game 2. “Defensively, we probably played better, but we still have a long way to go there. “I really wanted to see us come out and have a mature attitude about this game. We did come out and play physical, but instead of doing it between the whistles, we tried to bully people and had a bunch of dumb penalties - personal fouls that were just stupid. We’ve got to fix that.” The Terrors started fast, needing only four plays to find paydirt on the game’s opening possession. Senior quarterback Tyler Devlin hit junior receiver David Prince for a 39-yard touchdown strike on the team’s fourth offensive snap of the night less than two minutes into the game. The Terrors ran the Swinging Gate for a two-point try, with Ryan Scheuneman getting the ball and running across the goal line behind a wall of Terrors in red jerseys for an early 8-0 lead. Glynn had a big 69-yard passing play that would have given the team the ball deep inside MCA territory wiped out by a holding penalty on its next possession and ended up punting from its own 15-yard line. Early in the second quarter, the Terrors fumbled at the MCA 20 when sophomore running back Greg Peacock was fighting for extra yardage near the MCA sideline. Junior linebacker Jayln Ellison picked up the ball off the turf and headed down his sideline 79 yards to the Glynn 1. The long fumble return set up a 1-yard scoring run by senior TyReese Campbell to make the score 8-6. The Bucs tried to run for two points but didn’t convert. Glynn would wheel 52 yards the next time it had the ball to extend its lead to 15-8 late in the quarter. The drive started with MCA getting called for pass interference on a deep ball intended for Prince. Soon thereafter, Devlin hit Peacock for a 26-yard gain to the McIntosh 2. Peacock scored off the right side of the line on a rushing attempt right after that. Kody Arnold added the extra-point. The Bucs threatened to score in the final seconds before halftime. Aided by GA penalties, the Bucs advanced the ball to the Glynn 8 and had first-and-goal with 1:34 left in the half. They got a 3-yard run on first down, lost a yard to the 6 on second down and then called their final timeout of the half. Coming out of the timeout, Campbell gained 2 yards on third-and-goal from the 6, but on fourth-and-goal, the Glynn defense stopped Campbell at the 1 as time expired in the opening half. The third quarter started with a turnover as Glynn’s Marshawn Turner picked off an MCA pass along the Buccaneer sideline on first down from the 20 and returned it 17 yards to the 23 where the Terrors went on offense. Glynn quickly covered that distance, scoring in four plays with a 1-yard TD run by Peacock. Arnold again added the PAT for a 22-6 cushion. The Terrors pretty much sat on their lead from there. MCA closed out an 11-play, 44-yard drive moments into the fourth quarter on a 3-yard run by Campbell but its PAT kick failed, leaving the score 22-12. Inside the final minute, the Bucs gave up the ball deep in their territory, but Glynn took a snap from the victory formation with Devlin taking a knee. “The second half, we kind of went conservative with the score what it was,” Hidalgo said. “The only way for them to get back in the game was for us to lengthen the game by throwing it up a bunch. “We've got to get better at running the football, and we didn’t run it very well in the second half. Our pad level got high, and we didn’t come off the ball.” Devlin finished 6-of-8 passing for 102 yards. Prince had two catches for 58 yards including the scoring grab. Peacock carried 21 times for 56 yards and the two touchdowns. He also had two receptions for 34 yards. Arnold had punts of 48 and 53 yards for the Terrors. Campbell led the Bucs with 52 yards rushing on 19 carries. The Terrors will go back on the road next Friday as they make the short trip south to Kingsland to take on Camden County which will play Brunswick Friday night at GC Stadium.
