TERRORS KICKING OFF NEW SEASON TONIGHT
By Kevin Price
For GCS Athletics
Glynn Academy will begin a new football season Friday night, and the Red Terrors will be attempting to put together a winning season once again after falling short of that goal last fall.
Glynn finished 4-7 a year ago - its first losing season under head coach Rocky Hidalgo who look over the program in time for the 2014 season. The Terrors did still make the playoffs but dropped their opening-round game to powerful Langston Hughes which went on to play Buford for the Class AAAAAA state championship.
The Terrors will open the 2022 campaign with an inexperienced team that will have to grow up under the Friday night lights.
When it has the ball, Glynn plans to feature sophomore running back Greg Peacock, son of a former Terror running back who had the same exact name. GA used the younger Peacock sparingly early last year as a freshman but started him at running back late in the season and Peacock helped the team clinch a playoff spot.
He ran for 183 yards in the season finale against Statesboro as the Terrors won to secure a postseason berth.
Tyler Devlin returns as Glynn’s starting quarterback for the second consecutive season. He is a dual-threat signal-caller who is also a standout baseball player for the Terrors.
Devlin’s top target figures to be junior David Prince who caught a long touchdown pass last week in the team’s scrimmage against Richmond Hill.
Others who are inexperienced but have potential to be good receivers for the Terrors, according to Coach Hidalgo, are David Smiley and Ryan Young.
Glynn also plans to use tight ends Hugh Edgy and Ryan Scheuneman in the passing game.
Another player who could be an impact-player for the Terrors is senior running back Hank Noonan, a physical runner who has shown the ability to also catch the ball out of the backfield in preseason camp.
The Glynn offensive front is very much a work-in-progress going into the season. Center Jack Hunt, a junior, anchors the front as the most experienced player on the line.
The other projected starters are far less experienced. Glynn shook up the front between its Wayne County and Richmond Hill scrimmages, moving players into different positions. The starters in the second scrimmage in addition to Hunt were junior Max Poyski at right tackle, senior John McCloud at right guard, junior Cazaih Alston at left guard and senior Eddren Jackson at left tackle.
On defense, McCloud also started the Richmond Hill scrimmage at end as did sophomore Quay Evans. Senior Xzavia Cummings is the projected starter at nose guard.
Glynn’s inside linebackers both have varsity experience. They are juniors Peyton Parker and Devonte Lang.
The starting outside linebackers in last Friday’s scrimmage were Prince, who gives the Terrors length, athleticism and pass-rushing ability, and senior Cab Cabiness.
Hidalgo likes the potential of the team’s secondary group especially safeties William Tankersley and Ryan Young, both juniors. The cornerbacks, also both juniors, are Gavin Wells and Joseph Foster.
Kody Arnold, a college prospect, will handle the kicking and punting duties for the Terrors.
A look at the Terrors’ Opening Game:
Opponent: Statesboro
When: 7:30 p.m. Friday
Where: Womack Field, Statesboro
Radio: 102.5 FM
Last year/All-Time: GA won 34-7; SHS leads series 20-11.
The Skinny: Glynn Academy is beginning its ninth season under head coach Rocky Hidalgo while the Blue Devils are starting their sixth year under Jeff Kaiser.
Kaiser is a former standout defensive lineman for the Blue Devils who went on to play for the University of Georgia. He also was an all-star catcher for the Statesboro baseball team.
The Terrors have won the last five games against the Blue Devils including a 28-0 win at Statesboro in the final game of the 2020 regular season. Hidalgo is 4-0 against Statesboro.
Glynn has had mixed results under Hidalgo in opening games. The Terrors won his debut in 2014 over Wayne County and also defeated the Yellow Jackets in the 2015 opener.
In 2016 and 2017, Glynn lost its opener to Benedictine before dropping its opening game at home to Fort Dorchester in 2018 and later getting a win in that one by forfeit.
Glynn also fell to Dorchester in the opening game the next year before topping McIntosh County Academy to kick off the 2020 campaign. Last year, Glynn and MCA finished in a 14-14 tie, though Georgia High School Association rules call for overtime to be played in all games.
Statesboro is 3-2 in season-opening games under Kaiser. Last year, the Blue Devils defeated Wayne County 21-7 in their opener as part of the annual Erk Russell Classic played at Georgia Southern’s Paulson Stadium.
The Blue Devils are led by star athlete Kam Mikell who could play quarterback, running back or receiver. He has offers from several Power-5 schools including Georgia.
The junior started every game at quarterback last season for Statesboro. Mikell finished third in the 100-meter dash this past spring at the Class AAAAAA track meet in 10.5 seconds, a new school record. He also plays basketball for the Blue Devils.
