BHS WRESTLERS REACH STATE DUALS, WILL COMPETE THIS WEEKEND

By Kevin Price For GCS Athletics The Brunswick High wrestling team is headed back to the state duals tournament in Class AAAAA this weekend. The Pirates, ranked No. 5 in the state, qualified for the state duals with their second-place finish this past Saturday in the Region 1-AAAAA duals tournament. South Effingham, which hosted the region meet, defeated the Pirates for the championship. The Mustangs are ranked No. 1 in the state. Brunswick actually defeated Glynn Academy by a point to earn the chance to battle the Mustangs for the region championship. The Red Terrors missed out on a state berth, despite being ranked No. 3 in the state going into the region duals. Glynn will now get set for the traditional wrestling which also will include a region tournament and a state tournament. In team duals, it’s one team against another with the winning team in the overall match advancing. In traditional wrestling, teams enter their individual competitors in their appropriate weight class. Those competitors compete to advance in the tournament brackets at the region level and also the state level. The top qualifiers from each weight division in the region meet advance to the state tournament. Teams earn points toward their finish in the team standings based on how their wrestlers fare in the brackets. The higher a wrestler finishes in his weight class, the more points he earns for his team. The team with the most points at the end is declared the tournament champion. This week’s Class AAAAA state duals tourney will be held at Legacy Arena in Douglasville. It will begin on Friday and wrap up on Saturday. Friday’s matches begin at 4 p.m. The tournament will be down to the semifinals on Saturday when the action resumes at 9:30 in the morning. The Pirates are slated to face off with Villa Rica in the opening round. The Brunswick-Villa Rica winner would meet the winner between Creekview and Habersham Central later on Friday. South Effingham takes on Sequoyah in round one. The winner would face Newnan-Thomas County Central winner in the second round.
