GCS HIRES SLACK TO BECOME BRUNSWICK HIGH'S NEXT HEAD FOOTBALL COACH

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Glynn County Schools and Brunswick High School are proud to announce the appointment of Dr. Byron Slack as the new head coach of the Pirate football program. A veteran educator, decorated athlete, and U.S. Navy veteran, Dr. Slack brings over two decades of championship-level experience and a proven commitment to character-driven leadership. Dr. Slack joins BHS from Cook High School, where he led the Hornets to four consecutive state playoff appearances. His resume is defined by a legacy of excellence in Georgia High School football, including a 13-year tenure at Camden County High School where he contributed to two state championships, three semifinal appearances, and 10 region titles. While at Camden, Coach Slack served as the Defensive Coordinator and the Head Strength Coach. He also served as Defensive Coordinator for Lowndes High School for three years, which included the Lowndes 2019 state championship runner up title. Coach Slack has also served as the Assistant Head Coach at Colquitt County High School and as the Head Coach of Hillgrove High School. Before he began coaching on the high school level, Coach Slack coached college football at Minnesota State University, the University of West Georgia, and Auburn University under coach Pat Dye. A native of Anchorage, Alaska, Dr. Slack’s path to coaching was paved by service. Coach Slack served in the United States Navy after college, where he did a four year tour of duty during wartime. Coach Slack was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal from the United States Navy. Following his Naval career, he walked on at the University of West Georgia, eventually becoming an AFCA First Team All-American in 1996. In 2003, the University of West Georgia inducted Slack into their Hall of Fame. Glynn County Schools Assistant Superintendent Steve Waters said, “We are extremely excited to welcome Dr. Byron Slack to Brunswick High. Coach Slack’s qualifications speak for themselves. When you speak to football coaches around the State of Georgia, they all know Coach Slack and they all speak very highly of him. I am really excited to see the positive impact Coach will have on our student-athletes. He constantly refers to his philosophy as “The Standard.” Coach Slack will hold our student athletes accountable and they will have to meet “the standard” in the classroom, in the weight room, on the field, and in the community. He will bring a character education program with him that will help our students learn the importance of academics, behavior, hard work, and becoming a young man. These values, along with his championship coaching experience, made him the perfect fit to become the next Head Football Coach at Brunswick High.” Coach Slack stated, “I am honored to be the Head Coach at Brunswick High School. I hope to add to an already storied tradition of a great program.” Coach Slack has been married to his wife, Dr. Frances Slack, for 23 years. They have one son, Zion, who is 24 years old. Dr. Slack’s first day on the job will be Jan. 14. The community will be invited to a meet and greet and have a chance to meet the Slack family at a future date.
