Sports teams in Glynn County that are presently competing really didn’t take a break during the Christmas holidays.
But with school starting back this week locally, winter sports teams at both Brunswick High and Glynn Academy face big competitions this weekend.
In basketball, the weekend will tip off with Brunswick and Glynn meeting Friday night in the first of their two City Championship matchups this season. The games are scheduled to be played at Glynn.
The varsity girls contest is set for a 6:30 p.m. start with the boys game slated for 8 p.m. The varsity games will follow afternoon junior varsity games.
The Brunswick girls are 13-3 on the season after an 8-0 start prior to the Christmas break. Their three losses came against quality teams in holiday tournaments. They have won three straight games coming into Friday’s collision with GA which will be the Region 1-AAAAA opener for the Lady Pirates.
The Lady Terrors opened the region slate Tuesday at Bradwell Institute, battling the unbeaten Lady Tigers to the finish before falling 38-34. Glynn is 11-6 overall.
As for the boys teams, Brunswick comes into the matchup with Glynn sporting a 14-2 record. The Pirates have won 10 in a row since dropping a game to Camden County in early December. The Pirates' only other loss was a 52-50 decision against Lowndes in the season opener.
The Red Terrors, who made a coaching change in December, are currently 6-13 on the season. They opened league play Tuesday with an 84-59 loss to a solid Bradwell team in Hinesville.
Glynn had won their previous two games before the loss to the Tigers. One of those was a 58-50 victory over McIntosh County Academy in the holiday tournament hosted by Brunswick.
Also, this weekend the Brunswick and Glynn wrestling teams will compete in the area duals tournament which will be hosted at South Effingham on Saturday.
South Effingham is ranked No. 1 in the state in one coaches poll while Glynn is ranked third and Brunswick is ranked fifth.
Weigh-ins start at 9 a.m. with the first round of wrestling slated for 11.
Admission is $10 for the day.
