For GCS Athletics
The Glynn Academy and Brunswick High football teams will be in action Friday night as they gear up for their 2025 seasons which kick off next week.
The Pirates and Red Terrors will play scrimmage games Friday against a pair of Southeast Georgia heavyweights.
Brunswick will be at Glynn County Stadium to face off against Ware County while Glynn will go on the road to Blackshear to take on the Pierce County Bears.
The BHS-Ware game here in Brunswick is set for 7:30 p.m.
Both Glynn and Brunswick played the same two teams last year in scrimmages, but Glynnn met Pierce at the local stadium while the Pirates went to Waycross to face the Gators.
BHS will open its new season next Friday at Camden County while Glynn will be at home for its season opener against Wayne County.
The Pirates are coming off a 2024 campaign in which they won Region 1-AAAAA and reached the second round of the Class AAAAA state playoffs before falling to Coffee which went on to play in the semifinals. BHS finished the season 10-2 overall.
Brunswick returns several key players from a high-powered offense a year ago including senior quarterback Grant Moore and senior tight end Heze Kent who announced his commitment to the Florida Gators last month.
The Pirates are rebuilding on defense after losing key players to graduation.
Ware finished 6-6 last fall and also made the second round of the Class AAAA state playoffs before losing to eventual state champion North Oconee.
Glynn was a playoff team a year ago after winning six games in the regular season. The Terrors finished 6-5 overall after losing a first-round game at Rome in the Class AAAAA state playoffs.
Returning players for Glynn include receivers Tyree Chisolm and Sean Wallace on offense and linebackers Smith Whitehead and Cooper Reiss on defense.
Pierce reached the Class AA quarterfinals in 2024 before losing to eventual state champion Carver-Columbus. The Bears finished the season 11-2 overall.
Pierce won the Class AA state crown in 2023.
